Eaton named USATF Athlete of the Week
INDIANAPOLIS - Ashton Eaton has been named USA Track & Field’s Athlete of the Week after winning the IAAF World Indoor Championships heptathlon in a world record of 6,645 points on March 10 in Istanbul, Turkey.
Eaton (Eugene, Ore.) bettered his own world record from 2010 by 146 points. The U.S. now claims the top-three performances of all time with Eaton taking the top two marks and Dan O’Brien’s 1993 world record of 6,476 taking the third spot.
Over the two day competition, Eaton won five of the seven events to finish well ahead of runner-up Oleksiy Kasyanov of Ukraine (6,071). Eaton also earned a personal best in the long jump with a mark of 8.16m/26-9.25.
“My next target is going to be the Olympic Trials because we have such a good team,” Eaton said after winning his gold medal. “I’m a lot further along (than I was during the world record in 2010) now as a professional. I haven’t peaked yet. I hit some good marks. I just want to stay healthy.”
