A 5-time NCAA Champion and 15-time All-American at Stanford, Lauren Fleshman is a California native who joined OTC Elite in the spring of 2008. She is currently ranked just outside the Top Ten on the U.S. All-Time list for the 5,000-meters – with a personal best of 14.58.48.

Professional: Lauren completed her 2011 season with a successful debut at the marathon distance in New York. She was the second top-placed American at 16th in a time of 2:37.23. Despite such a great showing in her first marathon, Lauren fought a persistent injury throughout the 2012 season. With her successful 5,000-meter races a year prior, Lauren qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials. In front of a home crowd at Hayward Field, many of whom knew how hard she trained through her injury to race at the Trials, Fleshman qualified in her semifinal of the 5,000 meters, and raced for the final time in the 2012 outdoor season in the 5k final at the Trials.

After a limited spring racing schedule in 2011, due to an injury which kept her from training until early April, Fleshman busted out the second-fastest 5,000-meter race of her career, winning the London Diamond League contest in 15:00.57. With that win, Fleshman upped her Diamond League/Super Grand Prix victories to four total. Also due to her quick time in London, Fleshman was added to the Team USA roster at the World Championships in Daegu. She went on to not only qualify for the finals but to place 7th overall, which tied her as the highest American female finisher ever in the 5,000 at a World Championship event.

In 2010, after two injury-plagued years, Fleshman showed what she’s capable of when healthy – defeating a stellar field to win her second career USA Outdoor title in the 5,000 meters. Fleshman shocked spectators, announcers and fellow competitors with an insurmountable finishing kick over the last 600 meters, winning in 15:28.70 on a hot, humid day in Des Moines, Iowa. Prior to that result, Fleshman opened up 2010 with another first-place showing in the 5k (15:42.46) at the Oregon Relays on April 30. She then took third in the 1,500 at the OSAA Meet on May 28 in a season-best time of 4:12.30. Only six days after her USATF Championship in late June, Fleshman had trouble rebounding and took tenth against many of the world’s best 5,000-meter runners at the Prefontaine Classic – running a 15:33.32. After regrouping for a few weeks at altitude, Fleshman ran back into form with an OTC Elite record time of 8:46.97 in the 3,000 at the Monaco Diamond League meet on July 22, and a season-best 5k time of 15:13.08 at Crystal Palace. After returning home in September, she closed out her season as the XTerra Trail Half Marathon National Champion for the second year in a row.

Previous Professional Highlights: In 2008, Fleshman won the Melbourne Grand Prix 5k and broke the 15-minute barrier in New York City, running a 14:58.48 to win the Reebok Grand Prix and place her name amidst the best Americans to ever run that distance. She was fifth at the Olympic Trials that year. … In 2007, Fleshman grabbed fourth at the USA Championships just missing the World team, but went on to set PR’s in every event (1500, 3k, 5k), and win the Crystal Palace Grand Prix. In 2006, Fleshman won her first national 5,000-meter title in 15:12.37 and was the top-ranked American female at that distance. … In 2005, she finished 2nd in the USA Championships to qualify for the World Championships in Helsinki. That summer she set a then PR of 8:43.95 in the 3,000 meters in Lappeenranta; and in cross country, she paced Team USA to a bronze medal in the IAAF World Cross Country Championships with an 11th-place showing. … In 2004, Fleshman’s rookie Pro Year, she started the year strong with third in the U.S. cross country championships and represented the USA at the World XC in Belgium. She then ran a Spring season opener of 15:09 showing great promise, but suffered a stress fracture late in the track season and could not compete at the Olympic Trials. … In 2003, her senior year of college, Fleshman finished fourth at the USA Championships and was called up later in the summer to represent Team USA at the World Championships in Paris. She clocked a then PR of 15:12.71 in the opening round of the 5k.

College: From the fall of 1999 to the spring of 2003, Fleshman had 15 opportunities to gain All-American status as a Stanford Cardinal, and she was perfect – going 15-of-15 in NCAA Championship races. In five of those 15 contests, Fleshman won national titles as well: in 2001 she won her first 5,000-meter title at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, in 2002 she won her second 5k title, and in 2003, she won her third. Her other two national championships came indoors, in the 3,000 in 2002 and as a member of the Stanford distance medley relay team in 2000. Her other notable accomplishment is that she has what might be the lowest overall point total for Cross Country NCAA performances for four consecutive years with 23 (5th, 11th, 3rd, 4th), a rare mark of consistency.

High School: Fleshman graduated from Canyon High School in Canyon Country, California in the spring of 1999. In an accolade-filled senior year, Fleshman won a state cross country title in the fall and went on to complete an extraordinary distance triple at the CIF-Southern Section Championships – winning Division II titles in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200. She finished off that fateful spring as the California state champion in the 3,200 – in a personal best 10:18.81. Fleshman also won CIF-SS titles in the 1,600 and 3,200 during her junior year.

Personal: A Human Biology major while at Stanford, Fleshman currently does community outreach with her blog at http://asklaurenfleshman.com, is pioneering a sports psychology design concept for women called Believe I Am (http://believeiam.com) with Irish Olympian and friend Ro McGettigan, and runs a small food business – “Picky Bars” – with husband Jesse Thomas and fellow elite runner Stephanie Rothstein (www.pickybars.com). Thomas, currently an elite triathlete, was also an All-American runner at Stanford. Fleshman is active in the running community and helps coach a recreational team in Eugene called “The Flyers” with Ian Dobson and Julia Lucas. Fleshman was born on September 26, 1981 to parents Frank and Joyce, and has one younger sister Lindsay, who is a nurse in California.
