Boxed in from the start and forced to slow up, Nicole Teter made a calculated gamble Friday that ultimately paid off.

Teter, who lives and trains in Eugene, defied convention and went to the outside early in her 800-meter qualifying race, a decision that helped her avoid jostling in the home stretch as she easily advanced to today’s event semifinals in the U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials at Hayward Field.
