The fall that claimed Nicole Teter in the first semifinal of the women’s 800 meters Saturday at the U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials left one favorite thankful for her prerace strategy and another reconsidering her own.

After getting caught up in traffic during Friday’s quarterfinals, Alice Schmidt went hard from the start and avoided the trouble in the first semifinal Saturday, advancing in 2 minutes, 3.27 seconds.
