Jesse Williams uses wrestling roots to take competition to the mat | High flyer’s hoops snub led to wrestling and greater heights

It probably won’t come as a surprise to learn that Jesse Williams plays pickup basketball. He’s a regular at the rec center on the Oregon campus, just a hop, skip and a high jump from Hayward Field.

His game can be fairly quiet, though that’s not so much caution as waiting for opportunity.

“When I get a hole, I’m gonna go up and slam one down,” he said.

What else but ferocious dunks would you expect from the world’s No. 2-ranked high jumper?

Williams understands the risks. If he were injured ... oh, boy. But hey, he enjoys the pastime. And just maybe he owes basketball. It led him to the sport he loves:

Wrestling.
