LONDONDERRY, N.H. - Two fewer seconds, and Sean O'Brien would have set the record.
The Tilton, N.H. resident won the eighth annual Millennium Mile race in 3:52, one second shy of the course record set in 1999 by Scott Anderson.
O'Brien finished the mile-long downhill straightaway that started at Londonderry High School well ahead of Brighton (Mass.) resident Brendan Collins (4:05) and Derry's Peter Najem (4:07), who now runs for Plymouth State College.
Jen Campbell was the top female runner, finishing in 4:34. Dover's Amy Gostzyla, formerly of Derry, finished five seconds behind her, while Zofia Wieciorkowska of Stratford, N.H. rounded out the top-three (4:47).
Pinkerton track star Chris Pietrocarlo took 10th place, finishing in 4:23.
In all, 626 runners turned out for the race, with participants ranging from 3-year-old Brady Cheyne of Brookline, N.H. to 82-year-old Tom Labo.
