The January 2011 edition of Track & Field news features our annual "Where They Are Going" feature, a tracking of which collegiate schools picked up which athletes. In a rare recruiting coup, Vin Lananna's Oregon powerhouse scored the best-rated classes for each sex. The Ducks' biggest catch was national-record setting javelin thrower Sam Crouser (Gresham, Oregon).

I've always wondered how they go about getting info for this list. Does Track and Field News just go by what teams release or do they do some detective work?

UO Recruiting Classes Ranked No. 1 by T&F News

Both the Duck men and the women top the 2010 rankings.

EUGENE, Ore. -- Oregon has landed the top spot in the nation for both its men’s and women’s track and field 2010 recruiting classes, according to Track & Field News.

It is believed to be the first time in school history that both programs’ recruiting classes have garnered T&F News’ top spot.

In its January issue, the “Bible of the Sport” cited national prep boys’ athlete of the year Sam Crouser, who set a U.S. junior record in the javelin with a throw of 255-4 in addition to his impressive marks in the shot put (64-5.5) and discus (205-10), as the anchor of the nation’s top class. The magazine also mentioned No. 2 quarter-miler Michael Berry (46.13) and USA Junior 10,000 meter champion Parker Stinson (29:32.23), in addition to sub-4:10 milers Colby Alexander and Cole Watson. The men’s ranking was also bolstered by a couple of transfers in Josh Heidegger, a former NCAA Division II runner-up in the javelin (223-2), and 7-2.5 high jumper Justin Frick.

The men also got points for freshmen Jacob Budwig in the discus (185-0), Dakotah Keys in the decathlon (7,024), pole vault (15-6) and long jump (23-8.5) and Brian Shrader in the 800 meters (1:52.89).

Crouser (Gresham), Watson (Rogue River), Keys (Sweet Home) and Heidegger (Medford) are natives of the state of Oregon.

A bevy of middle distance and quarter-milers lifted the Oregon women into the top spot, led by 22-time North Dakota state champion Laura Roesler, whose 800 meter best of 2:03.08 ranked second in the country last year.

The women’s class also featured the No. 2 pole vaulter in Kortney Ross (13-6), the No. 4 miler in Megan Patrignelli (4:46.91) and the No. 5 400 meter runner in Chizoba Okodogbe (53.06).

They earned additional points from freshmen Phyllis Francis in the 800 meters (2:04.85), Sarah Andrews in the 5,000 meters (16:42.38), English Gardner in the 100 (11.56), 200 (24.01) and 400 (54.00) meters, and transfer Lauryn Newson, who ranked in the 100 (11.60), 200 (23.65) and long jump (21-7.25), qualifying for the 2010 USA Track & Field Championships in the field event.
